Founded in 1996, as New York’s and New Jersey’s regional ISP, 1
Terabit, Inc. (also known as Terabit.Net) within months was hosting
over 700 Web sites. At that time, some of the other services offered
were dedicated T-1 and Fractional T-1 Internet access.
In 1997, the 1 Terabit management decided to
provide data, phone, video and other communication
services on the same integrated network. That year the
company also became a Competitive Local Exchange
Carrier (CLEC).
In September 1998, 1 Terabit became a nationwide Backbone ISP by acquiring nationwide backbone
contracts with several nationwide carriers, which were laying over 20,000 miles of new fiber-optic
network around the country, connecting hundreds of cities.
Currently, 1 Terabit provides wholesale T-1, T-3 and OC-3 transport and Internet access services;
wholesale dial-up to ISPs and businesses nationwide; and local Dial Tone services in eight states.
1 Terabit utilizes new generation of fiber-optic multiplexing equipment
where some fiber-optic lines could be upgraded from current 2.488 Gbps OC-48 to 10 Gbps
OC-192 or to any future capacities. New Cisco 12000 series Gigabit Switch Routers are deployed on the
backbone to push current Cisco 7xxx series routers for customer aggregation. The new backbone also
has extensive peering with 25 high-speed private network connections to other backbone Internet
carriers, as well as high-speed connections to 10 public and private exchanges and peering with telco
carriers and about 100 ISPs at the public exchanges.
